Clonakilty and Bandon

Ireland

Ireland

Clonakilty, meaning ‘stone (castle) of the woods,’ is a town in County Cork founded on May 5, 1613. It is situated at the head of Clonakilty Bay. In 2007, Clonakilty received the prestigious European Destination of Excellence award from the European Commission. The town hosts several annual festivals, including the Clonakilty International Guitar Festival in mid-September, the Motion Festival, and the Waterfront Festival in August. Clonakilty is renowned for its black pudding, a recipe originating in Edward Twomey’s butcher shop on Pearse Street in 1880. Today, this secret spice recipe is exclusively known to the Twomey family, who continue to produce it at the Clonakilty Food Company.
